This will be the eighth year for the Robo-Skunks in which we will compete in the Los Angeles Regional. Through the partnerships, mentoring, and the challenges provided by the First Robotics Challenge and other competitions, we are proud to say that presently we have 36 Robo-Skunk alumni in college with 17 majoring in STEM related fields. Our Engineering alumni are at U.C. Berkeley, Stanford, Yale, Cal Poly Pomona, UCLA, U.C. Merced, Cal State Northridge, and Cal State L.A. We are proud to boast the 2008 "Most Promising Freshman Engineering Student" at Cal Poly Pomona (Reina Villanueva) and this year's "Best of the Best" in Electrical Engineering at Stanford (Berhane Azage), as members of our alumni. The ISTA/MESA programs, which we are a part of, focus on allowing us to experience as much applied math and science as possible. Through our mentors, teachers, and partners we get to experience things most inner-city kids do not. The efforts we and our mentors have put in have not gone unrecognized. Currently we have six HENAAC Award recipients and three MAES Award recipients as mentors. The ISTA/MESA program at Manual Arts H.S. was recognized in 2008 by the White House, in its educational report as a "Model for STEM Education." With our mentors showing us the way, it makes it easier to follow in their footsteps. We want to thank all of our sponsors, supporters, mentors, parents, teachers, and U.S.FIRST for providing us with this wonderful opportunity. |
